Today marks the 160th
anniversary of the burning of the Colored Orphan
Asylum in New York City. On Monday, July 13, 1863 and continuing through July
16, the worst riots in American history occurred—the New York City
Draft Riots. Below is an image of the Girls Play Area
from 1861, before the riot. A few other images of the children and workers, ca.
1860-61 are available for viewing online.
