When
I reached the top, I discovered yet another door, which I slowly opened. The
cavernous chamber I found myself in was brightly lit by small bulbous lamps of
extraordinary incandescence, quite unlike gaslight. A porcelain vat stood
against one wall, along with additional vessels and mechanical contraptions
situated in other areas of the vast room. An array of surgical instruments sat
on a metal tray with an extended arm and wheels on its bottom. I realized that
I was in some type of laboratory. I also saw three white-shrouded operating
tables lined up in a neat row against a far wall. I shut the door and moved
soundlessly into the room.
